Dr. Maki is a professor of hematology/oncology at the Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine and professor and member of the National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center at CSHL. He will play a key role in the strategic affiliation between Northwell and CSHL, which was established in 2015 to accelerate cancer research, diagnosis and treatment. Dr. Maki’s position as director includes building a portfolio of clinical research and exploring unique therapeutics for all cancers, which will increase cutting-edge treatment options for patients throughout the healthcare system.

He has extensive experience and expertise in the development of novel therapies to attack molecular targets for the treatment of soft-tissue and bone sarcomas. Additionally, he will oversee the expansion of the basic and translational sarcoma cancer research program in collaboration with CSHL. As part of the affiliation, CSHL and Northwell Health’s academic oncologists and clinicians will be pursuing bench-to-bedside research and clinical trials to improve the outcome of patients with this aggressive cancer using promising new agents.

“We are pleased that Dr. Maki will lead the joint Northwell Health Cancer Institute - Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory initiative to establish a Cancer Clinical Research Center that will greatly facilitate the ability to translate the outstanding basic science at CSHL into the clinic, enabling assessment of the effectiveness of new therapies in patients” said Bruce Stillman, Ph.D., President and CEO of CSHL.

“Dr. Maki is a highly esteemed oncologist and researcher, who has made a lifelong commitment to finding a cure for sarcoma,” said Lawrence Smith, M.D., Northwell Health’s physician-in-chief and dean of the Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine. “His new leadership role marks an exciting time in the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory-Northwell Health strategic collaboration, enabling us to focus our expertise on developing new clinical trials and treatment options more quickly to help patients fighting sarcoma and other complex cancers.”

The CSHL-Northwell Health clinical collaboration distinguishes the health system from other cancer specialty centers for its ability to deliver cancer therapeutics to patients throughout the region, while also meeting the comprehensive medical and surgical needs of those with cancer and at risk of the disease. Every year, Northwell Health treats more than 16,000 patients with cancer, giving patients access to the services of more than 200 physicians in more than 25 sub-specialties.
